The Platypus maybe strange and unique looking but it is nevertheless a fascinating animal.

It's an animal that can be found on both land and in the water.

As a mammal, it is also unique in its process of reproducing its offspring. Remember, mammals usually give birth (just as people give birth to human babies). But in the case of the platypus, it lays eggs (like birds - even though it's not a bird).

As friendly and lovable as these creatures are, however, they can be quite dangerous, too. They can produce venom with a special gland located at their ankles (only the males has venom) and they can use this venom to defend themselves. This is a very powerful venom, by the way, and can even kill dogs. Although their venom is not strong enough to kill a person, it can cause a lot of pain - pain that can last for days, weeks, or even months.
