All of our bargain books are brand new, perfectly readable and represent a tremendous value! The bargain books are, however, publisher overstocks and remainders that TRW purchases at deep discounts. As a result, they may have a small mark through the UPC bar code or a small mark on the side of the book. This is simply to mark the books so they cannot be sent back to a publisher. Because of this, bargain books are non returnable to TRW unless they are damaged. Please consider this before ordering.

These books focus on important periods and figures in American history, from early Native American life to the Great Depression to the civil rights movement. Though the Spanish translations are adequate, the information is so basic it's practically useless. "La vida en aquella epoca" pages give context-setting bulleted facts about the time periods. The goal of this series is to show how an individual changed life in the United States, but the brevity of biographical information and the lack of substantive information make these books inadequate. For example, in the volume on Pocahontas, information about her is so limited as to be almost nonexistent. Archival photos and art illustrate the texts. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind. Gr 3–5— Although the series name suggests that the books cover a particular time period, only Roosevelt comes close to matching that description. The authors describe a significant event in United States history by using a famous American as a springboard. Each book opens with a brief biography. The rest of the text focuses on the event itself. The individual's life is woven into the history wherever appropriate but only in historical terms. Lincoln is mentioned when he writes the Emancipation Proclamation, when he wins re-election, and when he is assassinated. Washington and Roosevelt receive similar treatments. The books are attractive, with a photo or reproduction on every page, and captions add context and further information. Unfortunately, the writing is dry. Also, the large type and one paragraph of text per page suggest a young audience, but the topics are more appropriate for older children. The closest the books come to describing everyday life is on a final page called "If You Grew Up Long Ago," where readers will find a list of miscellaneous facts about technology, toys, and transportation during that period.—Carol S.
