Victor Villanueva has created a monster When Vic and his twin sister Tori are forced to move 500 miles away from everything and everyone they've always known, including the grave of Vic's late best friend, Franki, Vic's entire life feels in shambles. In his new home, Vic can't seem to find his footing. His dad and stepmom are trying to buy his affection, his stepsister is a complete brat, and to make matters worse, his twin Tori is fitting in just fine. Vic's loneliness makes him miss Franki even more.

One afternoon Vic plays with a science experiment and his abuela's bruja to bring Franki back... only it works Franki arrives at Pennylane School the next day, and the other kids immediately flock to her. Suddenly Vic and Franki are Pennylane School's coolest new duo. But when Vic starts to lose control of Franki, everything goes awry. Vic is confronted with what it means to bring back the past and the consequences of trying to control the future. As Vic struggles to navigate this confusing new world, he finds himself wondering if he might have been just fine in the present... all on his own.
