Publisher Description:
Thousands of drag race fans remember Pete Hill--the humble and very successful racer from Greenville, South Carolina. Without a big sponsor and riding a blown, fuel-burning Knucklehead, Pete Hill not only beat the other Harleys but he also beat the Kawasakis. And all with an obsolete V-Twin design that went out of production in 1948.

Written by his one-person pit crew, his wife Jackie Hill, this book follows Pete's career from his first Knucklehead-powered four-wheel dragster to his ascension to motorcycle Top Fuel.

Jackie tells the story like it was. The joy of winning and the hard lumps that came before the wins. The long nights on the road, the struggle to find pushrods that don't bend (make your own), and risk of learning how to mix Nitromethane.

Pete Hill was and is the real deal who had no big sponsors. Pete built his own bikes and won with an outdated engine design: the Knucklehead. Jackie walks the reader through each setback and each win. She puts you right in the middle of the action. Reading Jackie's book is like going back in time with a pit pass for hundreds of drag races.

Contributor Bio(s): Hill, Jackie: - "Jackie Hill married Pete while still in high school. "When I first met Pete," explains Jackie, "he had five Harleys." And though he sold all five so they could buy a house, it wasn't long before Pete brought home a damaged Harley that needed a new home. Rather than tell her husband "You can't be spending all that time and money on motorcycles," Jackie became Pete's partner in their motorcycle shop and on the drag strip.

Pete considered building his first fuel bike in the mid-1970s, but he hesitated due to the cost in both dollars and the time it took to build a totally new machine. It was Jackie who insisted they take the plunge, "Let's do it," said Jackie. "We could build one. You know you'd like to ride one!"

Build one they did, and ride one Pete did, right into the winner's circle. Jackie drove the tow car, pushed him back to the line after a hellacious burnout, and, after the run, checked the spark plugs, mixed more nitro for the next run, kept track of all their wins, and cataloged all their time slips. Jackie has taken all those time slips, notebooks, and memories and compiled them into a first-person account of Pete Hill - A Legend on Two Wheels."
