Publisher Description:
BREAKING amp TRAINING DOGS Being Concise Directions For The Proper Education Of Dogs Both For The Field And For Companions. By "Pathfinder." (H.C. Dear) And Hugh Dalziel. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in 1875 this scarce book on early dog training is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. A second, enlarged and revised edition was published in 1903 and is equally elusive. This latter edition has been republished by VINTAGE DOG BOOKS, using the original text and artwork as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOK series. Both writers were well known figures in the dog world during that period, with Dalziel being the author of "British Dogs", one of the great canine classics. The first part of the book by "Pathfinder" deals with training dogs for use in the field. One hundred and fifty five pages contain five detailed chapters on: - Companionable Retrievers. - Field Retrievers. - Pointers and Setters. - Field Spaniels. - Terriers. The second part by Dalziel offers sound advice on the training of non - sporting dogs for various tasks. Ninety eight pages contain chapters on: - Bloodhounds and Tracking. - Trail and Draghounds. - Defenders and Watchdogs. - Sheepdogs and Stock Tenders. - Life Savers and Water Dogs. - Vermin Destroyers. - Physical Training and Greyhounds. - Tricky Dogs. - Tips on Sheep Worrying, Fowl Killing, Barking at Night, etc. Both parts contain vintage photos of various dog breeds. Although a two part treatise, the book should be read as a whole, as much of the expert advice contained will be found to be relevant to most of the breeds in each section. This is a fascinating read for any dog lover or historian, with much of the information still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
