Twelve-year-old Jazz Taylor has a special bond with her grandfather, made even more special by the mysterious games he creates just for them. After doctors diagnose Grandpa with a form of Alzheimer's, he warns Jazz never to forget her training. But she has no idea what he means.

Jazz's desperation blinds her to the reality of this incurable disease, but she is determined to save him. Her best friend, Blossom Roundtree, an eccentric, lacto-ovo vegetarian Wiccan-Methodist, refuses to let Jazz struggle alone.

When her parents ship her off to camp, she experiences terrifying events, heralded by an encounter with a sinister hitchhiker. But no adult believes her. Blossom tries to help, and their new friend, the genius boy, Davy Heaton, lends his analytical brain to the fight.

But on one fateful day, the sinister man attacks. Jazz and Blossom flee the camp, running for their lives. Will the mysterious training she learned from Grandpa save her and her best friends, or will their deaths conceal Grandpa's secrets forever?
