Publisher Description: "Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked him a question, trying to tempt him, and said, Master, what is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, you will love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like the first, you will love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hangs all of the law and the prophets." (Matthew 22:35-40) Loving God is not a difficult task for most believers. The hard part is learning to love our neighbors. Jesus said "offenses must come," but how do we as Christians learn to love others when they have offended or hurt us? We have the fruit of the spirit for tasks such as this. It is said "the root in us produces the fruit in us," but it is the dept of the root that produces the sweetness of the fruit. The Scripture teaches us that the "good ground" brings forth 30, 60, or a 100 fold." With this in mind, how do we nourish a Christ-centered root that travels to the depth of our being, which produces a 100 fold return? Loving our neighbor is only superseded by loving God. John said in 1 John 3:23, "And this is his commandment, That we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandments to do." This should be placed high in our Christian priorities. John also said "how can we love God who we cannot see, if we do not love our brothers who we can see? As Christians, we cannot leave this vital commandment left undone if we have any desire to mature in our faith. "The Second Commandment" guides us in strengthening ourselves in love, compassion, and forgiveness and that our ability to love the unlovely becomes a high priority in our faith. |
