Publisher Description: The Government of Uruguay (GOU) has traditionally recognized the important role that foreign and local investment plays in economic and social development and works to maintain a favorable investment climate. Uruguay and the United States signed a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) in November 2005, which entered into force on November 1, 2006. Uruguay and the United States also signed an Open Skies Agreement in late 2004 (ratified in May 2006), a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in January 2007, and a Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement in April 2008. Under the TIFA, both countries signed two additional protocols on business facilitation and on the environment in 2008. In 2014, Uruguay and the United States signed agreements to foster scientific and technological exchange, promote Small and Medium Firms, and facilitate the mutual assistance of their Customs. As of March 2015, both governments are negotiating an agreement on social security that would, among other things, facilitate the temporary stay of expats and workers in each country. The United States does not have a double-taxation treaty with Uruguay. |
