Publisher Description: The story of the journey a mother and her mentally disabled daughter travel together. When the mother learns her daughter is diagnosed as a person with MENTAL RETARDATION she realizes her dreams for her child disappeared in that moment. As the daughter grows the mother must deal with a life she was never prepared for. She then vows to herself and her daughter that she will do whatever is necessary to become the BEST MOTHER possible as she tries to make the WORLD a BETTER place for her daughter. Her daughter deserves NO LESS The letters and notes she received from the many people who had traveled the journey with them are intertwined through out the story. Personal photographs have been included in an effort for the reader to "connect" with the events as they unfolded during the journey. Tidbits of advice learned along the way are injected into the story that might be of help to parents or caregivers of loved ones with a disability. Parents or caregivers need to know that there are many advocates and professionals who can be helpful if they just reach out and ask. There is no benefit from hiding behind closed doors.....especially for the person with a disability. Don't expect someone else to help you or your loved one if you DON'T make the effort yourself. DON'T BECOME A PART OF YOUR LOVED ONE'S DISABILITY There are parts of the story that may make you chuckle at the authors expense but it was a risk worth taking. They say, "laughter is the best medicine " |
