Publisher Description:

At any time an unexpected health crisis or financial setback can suddenly propel us into unknown territory. As we age facing an uncertain future without a plan is like taking an "Accidental Safari" without a map. Attorney/Author Richard C. Tizzano, a trusted advocate in Elder Law and Crisis Management, guides us through the jungles of Medicaid, Medicare and health insurance; wills, directives and powers of attorney; long-term care facilities and residential options; financial resources and regulations; and spiritual support systems. With compassionate, often humorous, stories from the thousands of families he has helped, Tizzano shows us clear pathways that lead to peace of mind in the areas of:

- Healthcare: Decision-making under pressure; the importance of having an advocate

- Housing: Options for facility types, and the levels and costs of care

- Finances and Insurance: Resources available to cover unexpected expenses

- Programs: Setting a course through Medicaid & Medicare

- Legal: Necessary documents to protect your assets and empower your advocates

- Spiritual: Providing support and hope for the journey

You wouldn't travel the jungle without preparation. So why face your future without a trusted guidebook? Whether you're planning for the future, supporting an elderly loved one, or already struggling with an Accidental Safari, this book will launch you in the right direction.

Contributor Bio(s): Tizzano, Richard C.: - I grew up in a multi-generational home in Queens, New York. My family found itself on an Accidental Safari when my mother, at age 42 years of age was paralyzed by a stroke. She was wheelchair bound for the rest of her life. My father stood by my mother and modeled for me a determination and commitment of self sacrifice and contentment. My grandparents, aunts, and uncles showed the same resolve and compassion. The extended family rallied around my father and me as we cared for my mother. My exposure to old fashioned, loving, in-home care turned my young heart to the needs of the elderly and disabled. I learned the skills and tricks necessary to survive, and even thrive, when a loved one needs 24/7 care. The challenges we faced together as a family and our joy in the struggle enriched my childhood significantly and gave life a richer and deeper meaning. My mother's stroke also led to a personal epiphany. I had the stunning realization that although there was pain in the world, I could be a force for good by running toward, not away from, the challenges of being a caregiver. I learned the truth that giving care is a privilege that brings a blessing. These experiences planted the seed that has become my life's work-helping others through their own Accidental Safari. I apply the information necessary to survive on an Accidental Safari to my story to the stories of my many clients in order to make the journey real and the application of the information real. necessary to survive For over 20 years, I have guided thousands of families through the unexpected journeys of elder and long-term care. I specializes in the field of Elder Law and Long Term Care Crisis Management, Strategic Care Cost Risk Mitigation and Sustainability. I have had training and practice in finance and pastoral ministry. I hold a BA from Vanguard University and a JD from Seattle University.
