All of our bargain books are brand new, perfectly readable and represent a tremendous value! The bargain books are, however, publisher overstocks and remainders that TRW purchases at deep discounts. As a result, they may have a small mark through the UPC bar code or a small mark on the side of the book. This is simply to mark the books so they cannot be sent back to a publisher. Because of this, bargain books are non returnable to TRW unless they are damaged. Please consider this before ordering.

These geography reference books disguised as travel guides use tidbits of trivia and engaging photographs (e.g., the tomato-throwing festival in [cf2]Espana[cf1]) to try to hook readers. Though it's an interesting approach, the encyclopedic texts tend to overpower the guidebook format, and many of the pictures are stock. Translation errors, typos, and several English-only resource lists weaken the Spanish-language editions. Reading list, timeline. Glos., ind. These profusely illustrated leveled-text editions present contemporary but insubstantial views of the two countries. India's many religions are introduced, but there is no word about the strife caused by some adherents, and the book barely mentions Gandhi. [cf2]Japan[cf1] only briefly mentions World War II and the post-war economic and technology boom. Reading list, timeline. Glos., ind. Gr 4-6 -These books are colorful, attractive, and superficial. The emphasis is on geography and daily life. Mexico is a bit more balanced than the others, but omits U.S.-Mexico relations, a topic of great interest at the moment. France has nothing on history, and India , only four paragraphs. The maps, crucial to interpreting the texts, are incomplete and woefully inadequate. Each title includes two movie selections in the bibliography that are inappropriate for this age; for starters, Like Water for Chocolate (Mexico ) and Moonsoon Wedding (India ) are rated R. There are typos and major omissions throughout. Don Nardo's France (2000), R. Conrad Stein's Mexico (1998), and Erin Pembrey Swan's India (2002, all Children's Press) remain the standard for upper elementary students. More condensed, but still thorough and with good visuals, are Donna L. Knoell's France (2002), Joanne Mattern's India (2003), and Barbara Saffer's Mexico (2001, all Capstone).-Ann W.
